Women’s basketball is going strong with a 4-2 record as they dominated over Grinnell College 79-47. They then had a close matchup with Bemidji College and won 76-67 on Nov. 20 and 21 in Grinnell. The Beavers couldn’t quite catch up to the Mavericks at Mankato State in Mankato on Nov. 24 and ended up losing 91-61.
The team then traveled to Indianola to play against UW-Whitewater and Nebraska Wesleyan on Nov. 27 and 28 at the Simpson College Classic. The Beavers lost to UW-Whitewater Warhawks 83-67 but seniors Margo Muhlbauer and Aubrey Hauswirth and juniors Jahde Hammer and Jocelyn Kock all had good games scoring over 10 points each. The women dominated over the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves 91-67. Hauswirth scored her career-best of 29 points to help with the victory.
“We executed our plays against Nebraska Wesleyan and there were a lot of open opportunities. Everyone played well and we weren’t selfish. Our team made the extra pass to the open person whether that be in the post or out on the arc,” Hauswirth said.
The Beavers took on the Norse Wednesday night in the Siebens Fieldhouse which was the conference opener for both teams. The score was close at the beginning, but the Beavers pulled away during the second half and won 75-41 over the Norse. Both offense and defense were strong and made it possible for Luther to only score 41 points.
But as in any game, there is always room for improvement. “We can always work on lowering our number of turnovers. Otherwise we just need to keep working hard and take it one game at a time,” Hauswirth said.
Muhlbauer scored another game-high of 22 points and made it clear that it’s her teammates that made it possible.
“I play with a great group of people who have helped me get to where I am this year. They push me every day in practice and that makes me that much better. Our team is very supportive of each other and that is a great feeling to know that your teammate has your back,” Muhlbauer said.
The Beavers realize the importance of teamwork and support for each other. Knowing they can trust each other and not be selfish makes a big difference in the way games turn out.
“I have a good feeling about this year’s team. We have good team chemistry and have worked hard in pre-season to put ourselves in a good position for the season. I think this year we are more focused on what we need to do every game to be successful,” Muhlbauer said.
The team will play again Saturday afternoon in Dubuque at Loras College to take on the Duhawks.
