The BVU softball team’s season ended last Friday in the IIAC Tournament with a loss to Central College in round two of tournament action. The Beavers fell to Coe in the first round. The Dutch women scored five of its nine runs over the final two innings to break a 4-4 tie and knock off BVU, 9-4. Despite the season-ending loss, the Beavers out-hit the Dutch 12-8. The Beavers had a two-run second-inning double off the bat of junior Becky Willer to take a 2-0 lead.
The Dutch then got a run in the third and three more in the fourth to take its first lead of the afternoon, 4-2. BVU rallied with a pair of runs of its own in the fifth, getting a two-run home run from first-year Ashley Pearse to bring the score to 4-4.
Central came back in the bottom of the inning with a two-run double before a three-run homer in the sixth broke the game open and gave the Dutch their five-run lead.Willer and Pearse each finished with two hits and two RBI for BVU, while senior Amy Hasbrouck and first-year Hailey Davis also had a pair of base hits.
Sophomore Tiffany Promes suffered the loss on the mound and finishes the season at 5-7 overall.BVU closes its season at 15-19 overall. The game also marked the final contest in the careers of Hasbrouck and fellow senior Ty Zimmerman. When reflecting on the season junior Chancy Wilke spoke highly of the team.
“We did a good job of coming together and playing as a team, We were able to keep each other up even during our tough times.” Wilke said.
The women saw their fair share of sturggles through the season, but overall came out much improved and were able to make their “climb.”
The Beavers won seven more games this year compared to last season and won five more conference games. They advanced to the tournament for the frist since 2006 and will return the bulk of their roster next season.
