Heaving for the Title — Junior Morgan Darrow is practicing her shot put before leaving for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday. Darrow will compete for the National Title at Dupaw University over the weekend in Illinois. The women’s shot put preliminaries and finals are scheduled for Saturday afternoon around 2:30 p.m.

The BVU indoor track and field teams have been working hard all season hoping to qualify for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The last regular season events, the 2010 Iowa Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships and the ISU Last Chance Meet represented the final opportunities for members of the BVU track and field teams to qualify for NCAA Championships.

BVU junior Morgan Darrow was able to solidify her qualifying spot into the championships with a strong showing at the 2010 Iowa Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships by claiming women’s shot put title.

Darrow won the event by posting a heave of 13.63 meters which bettered her NCAA provisional mark from 13.21 meters set earlier in the season and nearly matched her personal best of 13.67 meters.

Darrow enters the championships, which are being held this weekend at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana with the ninth-best throw in the women’s field. Darrow plans on using past experience as a guide to reach her goals for the upcoming event.

Last season Darrow just missed All-American honors at the championships with a heave of 13.41 meters and she hopes to better this year’s results.
“My goal is to finish top eight and be an All-American. Last year I finished ninth and it would be great if that changed this year,” Darrow said.

Darrow will be the lone representative for BVU at the Indoor Track and Field Championships and has spent the past week practicing alone in a more relaxed atmosphere. In preparation for this weekend’s event, Darrow has been lifting weights, practicing her throws, and getting mentally focused.

“In order to reach my goal, I am just focusing on me and forgetting about where I am or who else is throwing, because at the end of the day, worrying about me is the only thing I can control,” Darrow said.
