Everyone has their own habits of learning. Some students like to study in a silent place, so they prefer to go to library. Some students can even manage to study with music, so they can study anywhere. I read an article published in The Tack called, “Develop study habits to fit your learning style,” written by Lindsey Marean. I really liked the way different study habits are discussed in this article. Marean discussed the advantages and disadvantages of different ways of studying. Our environment always affects our ability to learn.
We all know the importance of guidance in the individual’s life. Our university also provided us an opportunity to figure out which learning habit best fits our style. Buena Vista University (BVU) organized an event, “Understanding learning styles.” In this event, they gave students an opportunity to learn some tips to become better learners. They also talked about the different learning styles and helped students figure out their own learning style. They discussed different ways students can use their learning style to prepare for their exams and take notes. I think all this information is very helpful for students who face problems in managing their time and learning.
One thing that I strongly agree with Marean is that it’s not good for students to study in their dorm room. I learned this through personal experience. I used to study in my dorm room at the beginning of my first semester, but I was not able to concentrate. Whenever I tried to study in my dorm room, I fell asleep. I talked to my professor about my problem and he advised me not to study in my room. After that, I started studying in the library or in the Science Center. I figured out that it really helps me to concentrate more on my studies. I feel that it’s very important to select the correct learning style and environment that encourages students to learn in a better way.
After reading this article, I learned many important study tips, like to pay attention to course sylabi and be aware of all the major tests, papers, and projects due dates. Another important thing that I learned is to take care of your health and also take breaks while studying. All these are minor things, but still these tips are very important for students to know. I think Marean did a good job by writing about this topic because most of the time students ignore these minor things. I would like to add that with studying, it’s also important to get proper rest. This would help students to concentrate more.
