Hacking reveals environmental secret

Global warming has been all over for the last few years. Even here on campus, we have groups like Green Beaver and the mysterious Sustainability Committee who are seeking to change how we function to stave off the horrible consequences of global warming.  Sounds admirable right?

Too bad global warming isn’t real.  Late last week someone hacked into the University of East Anglica’s Climate Research Unit (CRU) and released several damaging e-mails. These e-mails were described by an article in the London Telegraph as the “Final Nail in the coffin of Global Warming.” What did these e-mails entail?

Well several of them are focused on how best to “cook the books” statistically.  One e-mail describes what is called “Mike’s Nature Trick.”  Mike’s “Trick” includes adding false information and deleting damaging data to the sample.  Adding these false temperatures was done in an effort to hide the true trend in global temperatures:  a general decrease in temperatures.

Now there would be no problem if the CRU would just release their data (the real data, what they had before they added new temperatures), however mysteriously, and conveniently that data has been deleted.

The CRU has no legitimate data for outside statisticians and environmental scientists to analyze.

Not only do these e-mails entail how the CRU faked data, they also talk about how the group would work with other like-minded scientists to ostracize and eliminate those scientists who have opposing views.  They would pressure other scientists to refuse peer-review reports critical of global warming.

So what is the bottom line?  This leak will force people to realize that global warming isn’t real.  In fact we are in a cooling period.  The University of Mexico’s Geophysics department stated that we are in store for a “mini-ice age” within the next 10 years.

Undoubtedly many ardent global warming advocates will disregard this report and still hold fast to their views.  I just hope that until fair, accurate, and impartial data is collected and analyzed we hold off capping thermostats, raising parking sticker prices, or any other drastic measures.

If the data supports the idea of global warming, then by all means let’s get a hold of it, and try to reverse any damage.

If the data doesn’t support it then we should just drop this green “fad.”
