Last year’s senior class raised $3,045 in order to pay for additions to the Buena Vista University (BVU) campus. Their gift included grills to be placed on campus for student use and a sand volleyball court to be construted behind the suites.
Bernie Saggau, BVU alumnus and current member of the BVU Board of Trustees, generously agreed to match every gift of at least $25 made by a graduating senior to the Class of 2009 Senior Class Gift Campaign.
“Once you have fulfilled at least $25 of your pledge, Saggau also made a gift matching your support of your project of choice [class gift or other BVU program],” Christina Danielsen, Advisor of the Senior Gift Committee, said.
The Senior Class Gift Committee had the idea to put a sand volleyball court behind the suites when gift ideas were being discussed. The committee met with Student Services and Maintenance staff to determine the best locations.
“The seniors wanted to utilize what we already had and expand on it to provide more areas across campus, and the seniors really liked the idea of putting something behind the suites,” Danielsen said.
According to Keith Schmidt, Director of Facilities Management, the sand volleyball court is complete and the grills are operational. The only work remaining for the project is to level the dirt off around the courts. Lighting will be installed near the courts as well.
Volleyballs are available to check out from the Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC) located in the basement of White Hall.
Students are excited about the new additions and are ready to utilize them.
“I’m definitely ready for the weather to warm up again so that I can get some friends together and play some volleyball,” senior Amanda Mordhorst said.
