Graduating senior - Sandra Smith had her vocal recital on Saturday, May 3. She performed many different songs in a couple different languages.

Senior Sandra Smith's vocal recital may have been a "time to say goodbye" Saturday night in Anderson Auditorium, but not before she, sophomore Jacob Richter and senior Cliff Coggins impressed the audience with their vocal talents.

Smith started off the program with a series of Italian and German songs ("Voce di donna" from La Gioconda, "Si mes vers avaient des ailes," "Widmung" and Ständchen"), which were very dramatic-sounding in nature. For the listeners in the audience who were not familiar with such languages, the program offered translations of the lyrics.

Richter also sang a couple of songs in Italian ("Vittoria, mio core!" and "Vaghissima sembianza") and German ("Winterweihe"), as well as one in English ("As Ever I Saw").

"I had done the German song my first year at BVU, but I had to choose some more for the recital," Richter said. "I had lessons with Paula (Keeler, assistant professor of music) every week and she helped me choose some more songs."

In addition to songs both in English and foreign languages, Smith also sang two from Broadway musicals, including "There's a Fine, Fine Line" from Avenue Q, which was Smith's favorite song to perform, and "Cock-eyed Optimist" from South Pacific. These songs allowed Smith to bring out her acting side on stage.

Smith also preformed two duets, one with Coggins and one with Richter.

"Cliff and I talked about doing a duet and we really wanted to do 'Romeo and Juliet' from Reefer Madness, but we couldn't find music for it," Smith said.

Because of this, Smith and Coggins ended up singing "As Long As You're Mine" from Wicked.

Even though it was not their first choice as far as a duet, both Coggins and Smith were pleased with the finished product.

"I'm really happy with it," Coggins said. "It's kind of nice because I've never gotten to sing with Sandra. I've always wanted to, I've just never pursued it."

To finish off the program, Smith and Richter sang "Time to Say Goodbye," an operatic song which combines English and Italian. The English translation of the song "Con te partirò" is "With you I will leave."

"It was so true having 'Time to Say Goodbye' as my last piece," Smith said. "It's kind of sad."
