BVU RIDES program continues to evolve

For many, BV Rides helps save lives. It stops students from losing their licenses, paying huge fines and in some cases from being assaulted walking back to campus.

This service, however, before hand had gone semi-uncensored by authority figures and that may soon change. Student Senate, one of the overseers of BV Rides, is considering several new approaches to the BV Rides dilemma.

BV Rides has been a problem with Student Senate since its conception. Lack of funding and lack of respect for the driver and the bus seem to be the main problems.

According to the budget, Buena Vista University (BVU) gives $20,000 to the BV Rides program, but Student Senate still must come up with almost 30 percent, the remaining $8,000, to fund this program. This is a pressing issue since continuous funding has not been found to pay the dividend. Lack of respect for the driver was also a pressing issue last year, which may change this year.

According to students, the new BV Rides driver is more respectful of the students and there have been no conflicts. Lack of respect for the bus, such as vomiting and destruction of the bus, is yet to be seen this year. In previous years most of this may be contributed to the intoxicated nature of the students.

While some students may see it as a reason to get heavily intoxicated, most see it as a way to get back and forth from the bar (and other locations) without the hassle and dangers involved in driving and walking.

BV Rides is actually a two-pronged program. The first prong, which has been discussed previously, is the BV Rides for Safety which is Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. There is also BV Rides Anytime, which provides transportation anytime from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day of the week.

Student Senate has yet to come up with a solution for these issues. An ad-hoc committee has been formed, but there have yet to be meetings.

Until solutions have been presented, Senators will be riding the bus every Saturday from 12 a.m.-2:30 a.m. This last week, Senators said that students noticed the presence of the Senators, and the bus was very calm. The Senate has decided as a whole to continue the presence of Senators on the bus for an underdetermined period of time.

"BV Rides is an essential part of student safety," junior Brittany Goede, a student Senator, said. "There need to be rules, but just general behavioral guidelines."

"Senators really have no authority over students, and we did not sign up to become those authority and police figures for the BV Rides bus," senior Autumn Golonka said.
