The infamous golden statue will be making its annual appearance at the 82nd Oscars on Sunday, Mar. 7 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
Funnyman Steve Martin will be hosting this event for his third time. Joining Martin for his first time hosting the Oscars is Alec Baldwin. This dynamic duo will be under a lot of pressure to keep the crowd entertained throughout the night.
There will be a lot of big name award presenters at the Oscars this year as well.
Some of the presenters are: Kathy Bates, Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Jake Gyllenhaal, Queen Latifah, Ben Stiller, and for all you Twilight and New Moon lovers: Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. All will be presenting the many Oscars for the night.
Like Oscars of the past, a lot of the nominees are people and movies we have never heard of. Who are the nominees for best actor and actress, and what movies are nominated for best picture? BVU students had some opinions on who will be winning at this year’s Oscars.
Best Picture nominees include: Avatar, The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, A Serious Man, Up, and Up in the Air.
“The Blind Side should win because it has got everything in it: drama, comedy, and suspense. It is also based on the true story of Michael Oher. Plus, Sandra Bullock is in the movie,” sophomore Chancey Wilcke said.
In the Best Leading Actor department, nominees include some impressive actors: Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart, George Clooney in Up in the Air, Colin Firth in A Single Man, Morgan Freeman in Invictus, and Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker.
“I haven’t seen any of the movies with the best actors in it. But, I would pick George Clooney because I have liked all of his other movies. Morgan Freeman wins all the other movies so it is time for someone else to win,” junior Melody Reding said.
In the category of Best Leading Actress the nominees are: Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side, Helen Mirren in The Last Station, Carey Mulligan in An Education, Gabourey Sidibe in Precious, and Meryl Streep in Julie & Julia.
“Sandra Bullock will win best leading actress. I thought her performance was very moving. She has come a long way from Miss Congeniality,” senior Chase Barrick said.
All together there are 24 categories for Oscars night. Some other categories recognized during the Oscars are: Documentary Features, Film Editing, Makeup, Music (Original Score), and Directing.
In the end, we will all probably see a few surprise winners, some tears, some long speeches cut short, and plenty of laughs with Martin and Baldwin as the hosts.
No matter what the case the show should be golden.
If you want to see who the winners of all the Oscars are check them out this Sunday on ABC at 7:30 p.m. Central Time.
