Locking down for bad behavior

You may have noticed the new signs up around the Social Science and Arts Hall (SSA) and the Center for Sculpture and Ceramics (CSC).  The buildings are to be locked now on Fridays and Saturdays beginning at 10 p.m. to help decrease general travel through the buildings.

I have classes in both buildings and spend a lot of time in each, particularly the CSC.  Every once in awhile, I’ll walk into the SSA building on a Monday morning and see yet another sign for a room missing.  Someone has yet again pulled one out of the wall.
Or, my favorite, seeing a beer can lying on the floor or on tables, or even on top of artwork.  Are students too lazy to walk to the garbage and throw away the can, or, an even more ridiculous thought, recycle?

These are part of the reasons for the change in the lock policy.  If people are going to disrespect a space, then consequences need to be put into place.

Of course, I could probably get into if you can’t drink responsibly then don’t consume alcohol at all, but we all know where that will lead:  absolutely nowhere.

I can still get into the art studios whenever I need.  Security is still supposed to unlock the doors for students with legitimate purposes.  Also, as long as people have their key cards with them, they can get through.

However, I feel it should be even stricter, and only allow art students after that time with their identification cards I suppose we’ll see how this system works out.
If students continue to be immature, the policy is just going to have to keep evolving until we have students complaining about their rights and having to walk completely around the building when it is freezing outside.

Security is too lenient in regards to immature and irresponsible students.

Walking through the buildings is also a safety concern at times.  Art students use machinery to work on their sculptures or to build stretchers for their paintings.
Having drunk people walk through the wood shop, acting as though it is a hallway rather than a classroom, can cause harm to others.

Imagine this scenario: a beginning sculpture student running a 2x4 through the table saw and a group of loud drunk students walk in, causing the already scared of sharp tools student to look up in surprise. Does this sound like a good idea?  I don’t know about you, but it sounds ridiculous to me.

My passion and knowledge come from being an academic assistant in the art department.  Your major or discipline area where you work is probably more important to you than to other students with disciplines different than yours.  How do you treat your space?
Or, if your dorm is more important to you, how do you treat your dorm?  How do you feelwhen someone vandalizes your territory?

Another possible solution is to move the RIDES bus to another location. The only reasons that it is at the bell is because it is a central location on campus and an easily identified feature.

I know this has been evaluated several times, however, it has never changed. I wouldn’t place the pick up or drop off near any academic building at all.

I think it should be on the corner next to Swope, Grand, or Briscoe.  That’s closer for the students, they wouldn’t walk to any academic building to wait for the bus.  The farthest point to walk to that corner would be if a student left the recreational center, and I doubt students are going right from working out to getting alcohol, though I could be wrong.
