Daily Apple reaches out to community

A few months ago, the Storm Lake community welcomed a new business called the Daily Apple. This exciting new business is a health store that sells organic foods, body care products, nutritional products, and offers health information to people wanting to live a healthier lifestyle.
The owner, Amanda Walljasper, and the manager, Heather Gallagher are both BVU graduates. Now, these two are teaming up with some of BVU’s current “Beavers” to reach out to the community and show off their store with the Local Market Place Event.
Laura Kuennen, a senior majoring in Philosophy with minors in Women’s Studies and Environmental Science, has been working with Daily Apple to make this event possible.
For her women’s studies senior capstone, she decided to use both her minors to combine her studies on healing energy with health food.
“I’m looking at ecofeminism for the health food, and bioethics when I’m looking at medicine. My plan was to combine these two things and look at the connections between the two,” Kuennen said.
The centerpiece for Kuennen’s table is a large Venn diagram, which demonstrates what these two topics have in common as well as some of their differences. She will also have some samples of recycled free seeds people can use in their garden, which is an alternative to going to a store and buying seeds every time you want to use your green thumb.
Kuennen will be leading a morning meditation workshop, which will introduce esoteric healing so people can learn about the power of healing energy.
“Esoteric healing is an energetic approach to healing and understanding the energies of our bodies and how you interact with yourself and with relationships. Esoteric actually means ‘understood by few,’ but I think we can all understand what it is,” Kuennen said.
Professor of English Kathy Kapitan will also have a table on gardening. She will be giving out tips on how to have a sustainable garden, and she will also have free samples of recycled seeds for people to take home. There will also be samples of homemade goods and products from the store, a table featuring local producers, and a chance to win a gift basket.
The Daily Apple is hosting the Local Market Place Event on Saturday May, 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors can come and go they you please, or join for the 10 a.m. meditation session. Store tours will run from 12 p.m. to 1, and afternoon visualization will be from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Go green, go healthy, and go check it out!
