Student thoughts on Twitter

Late on Mar. 4, Twitter celebrated its 10 billionth tweet. An amazing, over the top, unbelievable achievement?

CNN thinks yes.  A whole article entitled “Twitter’s mysterious 10 billionth tweet” can be found on their website.  The article states that the 10 billionth tweet is on a profile that is, by default, set to private.

That means that the public may never know what the famous tweet actually says.  The two tweets around the legendary 10 billionth are featured in the article, but Twitter decided not to release whether they are going to urge the user to go public.

When trying to find a BVU student’s opinion on the article, I got practically nothing.  Finally, I started simply telling people that Twitter has 10 billion tweets to get some kind of response.

The responses were split between something like “that is ridiculous,”  “10 billion?! Unbelievable,” and “good for Twitter.”

The news is good and bad for Twitter, based on my responses.  The good side being that Twitter is gaining a ton of popularity, and fast.  The downside, usually seen by people that don’t use Twitter I found, is viewed that people have nothing better to do with their time.  Either might be true, and to each their own, but a fact is a fact,  and Twitter has hit a milestone.

I have decided to focus on the good side because I think that it is a big accomplishment for Twitter.  While I feel a little of both sides, Twitter is a company, too.

They have done enough to get their word out there and created enough interest that there is a need for users to tweet regularly.  Twitter has outsmarted the vast majority of the population by creating the need to have an account and keep it active.

The evidence that is presented by CNN also shows that Twitter is becoming more and more appealing to not only people of the United States, but people all over the world.  After doing a little “creeping” on Twitter itself, I found the entity’s blog.

On Mar. 1, they announced partnerships with Yahoo!, Google, and Microsoft.  This shows that Twitter is keeping up with not only its current users, but also potential candidates.

By covering more and more internet sources as time goes by, fewer and fewer people will be left in the dark about Twitter’s up and coming popularity.  Congratulations on your 10 billion tweets, Twitter. The next milestone is not far off.
