Tight pants, come on, they're in

So Ms. Miley is not done partying in the U.S.A, but it is time to move on to something way more important than booty shorts, cowboy boots, and hair extensions. EDGEdOUT V! Some of you rookies (and probably veterans) of Buena Vista University (BVU) are confused as to what this even is.

Nope, it is not a new game for intramural sports during the weeknights, it’s KBVU 97.5 The Edge’s annual Battle-of-the-Bands! KBVU is BVU’s very own campus radio station that does not only serve campus, but 50 miles outside of the Storm Lake area as well.

I got you. I did not put “KBVU” or “The Edge” in the headline because as much as it pains me to say this (gasp!) you probably would not have wanted to read this. For those of you aren’t living “on the Edge” with KBVU, I’d really like to pull you a little closer to it. I mean that in the most non-suicidal way.

Contrary to popular belief, KBVU 97.5 The Edge is not “that station that only plays kids screaming and banging drums in an unstructured melody” nor are our fans just “wrist-slitting kids with weird hair and tight pants.”

Although we do have some great screamo bands and rather awesome boys and girls rocking the skinny jeans and crazy hair, KBVU has a lot to offer to you even if you don’t dabble in heavy metal and pink highlights.

There is more to KBVU than meets the eye. It is more than a radio station to students, it is an opportunity. We have staff selling sponsorships to bring great bands to Storm Lake, doing design work, keeping music up-to-date, setting up live remotes for businesses and high schools, training disc jockeys and much more.

The small things are what make KBVU so great. It is all run by students, which makes for a very unique experience.

Alternative music is at the heart of KBVU, and our passion is to bring local and regional acts to your speakers, wherever you may be listening. It’s not what we have to do, it’s what we LOVE to do.

If you have yet to attend a KBVU concert in your years here at BVU, I encourage you to take hold of the opportunity before you this weekend! The battle-of-the-bands takes place this Saturday at 7 p.m. at KC Hall here in Storm Lake. (KC Hall is across the street from Kings Pointe).

We’ve got seven great bands rounding out the lineup, all offering something a little different. Your fellow students have put in much time and effort to bring you a variety of great music from metal to pop-punk.

Did I mention it’s free with your BVU ID card? Yes, free. Are you 21+? We’ve got a bar available as well.

So step out of your boundaries, try something new and I’ll see you Saturday night at 7 p.m. for what I promise will rock your socks off. KBVU 97.5 The Edge: Northwest Iowa’s Best Alternative.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all those at BVU and in Storm Lake who worked to put on a great show Nov. 21st at EdgedOutV. I've heard a lot of comments from kids who really enjoyed it! I did, too. There was a lot of great music. I received a link to this story because of the reference in to "wrist-slitting kids.." That phrase does cause me concern for a few reasons. First, if kids are "wrist-slitting," we need to be taking action on that, rather than wondering what kind of music they listen to. Here is a link to a wonderful organization that addresses that issue: To Write Love On Her Arms. http://www.twloha.com Second, if it is a comment made in jest, it's an inappropriate "joke." Third, it is a very negative way to stero-type those who like a certain genre of music. An old guy I used to work with called rock music from the 70's "spear-waving music." See my point? That was a negative comment about Blacks and music. I wonder if this comment was a reference to the "Emo" genre of music, of which there was no "Emo" band at EdgedOutV. Also, "Screamo" is not the same as "metal" in music genres. Metal bands and fans cringe when that reference is made to their music! Within the metal genre, there are many sub-genres. Screamo is not one of them. Many of those in attendance at EdgedOutV, and me included, listen to The Edge, but don't fit a certain category of music, just as you say! I listen to many kinds of music from classic rock, classical, jazz, alternative, a little country and pop and hip-hop/rap, but now, mostly metal. I'm 55, have gray hair, can't wear tight pants (lol), and I sure don't slit my wrists! A young man walked up to me before the first band played at EdgedOutV and said I was the last person he'd expect to see at a show like that! I loved hearing that! The story behind my interest in metal may be of interest to some, so if anyone ever wants to know the whole story, please get a hold of me on facebook or at rldreier6@newulmtel.net Again, thank you for a great show this year!
