“I was very excited when they chose this image from my collection,” Professor of Media Studies Bruce Ellingson said.
A panorama of Buena Vista County goes on display in the main gallery of the Sioux City Art Center beginning Apr. 29. The 20 by 33 inch panorama, entitled “520th West of M50,” will be displayed in the gallery with other art pieces published in this year’s Briar Cliff Review.
Ellingson has more than a dozen of his large-scale panoramas on display in Storm Lake at the United Community Health Center and at Methodist Manor.
“520th West of M50” is from his ongoing photographic series, which documents the rural areas of Buena Vista County and Storm Lake.
“The piece I have in the Review is one of my favorites because it is less a pretty picture and more a study of rural life in the county. I think it is more nearly like the work of the Barbizon painters than any of my other images. It has cows and a ditch, rather than a lake and a sunset. So, I was very excited when they chose this image from my collection. Their choice confirmed my feelings that this picture of rural life is one of the most ‘authentic’ documents of BV County I have managed,” Ellingson said.
Ellingson has been granted a sabbatical from BVU this fall, and will be touring national parks west of the Mississippi to continue his large-scale panoramic photography. His images can be seen at his Flickr website: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bruceellingson/
“I am continuing my photographic work this year in Buena Vista County, and will expand that to include National Parks west of the Mississippi when I head out on my late summer/fall sabbatical,” said Ellingson.
All of the art from the Briar Cliff Review will be on display on the third floor art gallery in the Sioux City Art Center until Jul. 3.
The Review had a reception at the Sioux City Art Center Thursday, May 6 for all the artists whose visual arts and literature was published this year in Briar Cliff’s 22nd Review: http://www.briarcliff.edu/campus/bc_review.aspx.
