Low on cash or looking for ways to save some money without completely changing your lifestyle? There are many articles and tips out there on how to save money. But after research, I will point out some of the major ways to cut back on spending and then some of the small things that can really help when they are added up.
About.com had multiple articles on the best ways to save money in this economy. Some big things that go along with shopping include: hiding credit cards (which is possible), finding bargains, and stop buying on impulse.
These are all tips that I have taken to heart since I've had to start paying for some of my own things.
Get a debit card or checking account and force yourself to only spend what you have. It can be hard at first, but it's definitely worth it. You will then learn to find bargains. Shop smart. Trends come and go very quickly, so products often go on sale fairly quickly as well. Another part of being a smart shopper is thinking before you buy.
Do you really need the item? Think of what else that money could buy. Buying in bulk is another shopping tip that can really save you money. It may not seem like a lot at the time, but it will be worth it in the long run.
Another big money saver is giving up bad habits. Smoking, drinking, and gambling all add up very quickly. MSN money says that if a 40-year old quits smoking and puts the money in 401(k) savings, they could save almost $250,000 by the age of 70.
That is just an average, but a quarter million dollars can go a long way for anyone. Turning off your air conditioner once in awhile this summer can help save money also. You don't have to sit through scorching temperatures, but when you're not in the house or it's a cool night, turn it off. Replacing the air conditioner filter can help save on cooling costs, so do it often.
Cooking outside is also a way to save money, and it's fun. It keeps your house from getting really warm and needing to turn the air conditioner on a higher setting.
Another way to get yourself outside is to exercise outside. If it is possible, save on the gym costs and go for a run or do some workouts outside.
Shopping online, installing low-energy light bulbs, taking care of things so they last longer, accepting hand-me-downs, and not always keeping up with the Jones' are some more ways to really save money. Be conscious of your spending and cut down where you can. Little things add up, and it's worth giving up a few things to save large amounts.
